State Capitol Dome

The 1901 Alabama Constitution has been amended over 900 times, making it by far the longest state constitution. The string of amendments have created redundancies and often made the document hard to follow and interpret.

The aged Constitution is criticized for its outdated provisions, such as poll taxes, that were intended to deny access to the vote for certain voting classes. Even though court rulings have invalidated some of the provisions the document still is criticized and often holds Alabama back when recruiting new businesses and industries, as well as discouraging tourism into the State.
