On January 18, Centreville Press publisher David Daniel had the chance to sit down and interview Miki Mahan Heaton, who has just recently been appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to the Alabama Ironworks Commission.
A recently returned resident of Brierfield, Heaton shared that her parents moved to Bibb County in the late 1960s. Her father, Mike Mahan, was the local dentist, and her mother, Linda Mahan, taught at the University of Montevallo. Heaton went to Montevallo High School and went off to college to seek higher education in South Carolina.
After earning her degree in historic preservation, she stayed in South Carolina during the first leg of her career by working in Charleston on the Board of Architectural Review for the city during the height of its renovation and restoration of historic landmarks and buildings.
Once she moved on from Charleston, she relocated to finding employment in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, then Beaufort, South Carolina, before beginning the last part of her career in Anniston, Alabama. There, she managed the environmental cleanup program and oversaw the redevelopment of Fort McClellan, which she described as the highlight of her professional career.
After completing her time at Fort McClellan, she retired. She and her husband moved back to Brierfield, where they now live in the 1834 log cabin on the banks of Mahan Creek. Her father built that cabin originally for a friend to have as a weekend retreat house.
Happy to be back in Bibb County, Mahan is excited to get to work, diligently and enthusiastically preserving the rich history of Bibb County.
One of the things Mahan is most excited about is the beginning of market days at Brierfield Ironworks Park beginning in March. Through November, on the first Saturday of each month, people can come by to check out booths from various vendors that will have arts and crafts, produce, homemade goods, and more.
