Blake, 84, of West Blocton, passed away on
Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Funeral services
were held at Brown Service West Chapel on
Saturday, April 25, 2009 with Rev. Dennis
Horton and Rev. Ray Jones officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial
Gardens, Brown Service West Chapel
directing.
She was a
resident of Plantation Manor Retirement
Center for four years.
Mrs.
Blake is survived by her sons, John F. Blake
(Anne) and Glenn Blake (Ginger);
grandchildren, John Bryan Blake (Cindy) and
Glenn Blake, Jr. (Emily); great
grandchildren, Eryn, Ellie and Garrett;
sister, Velma McKinney; brother, Virgil
Lawrence.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, John T.
Blake, Jr.; parents, John E. and Paralee
Lawrence; brothers, James, Frank, George,
Henry and Buddy; sisters, Susie, Maudie,
Magalene and Elizabeth.
Donald Garry Brooks
Donald
Garry Brooks, 61, of Woodstock, passed away
on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at UAB Medical.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April
23, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Mission Baptist
Church Woodstock with Rev. Jimmy Jones
officiating. Burial followed at Hickman
Chapel Cemetery in Greenpond, Rockco Funeral
Home directing.
Donald
was a lifetime gospel singer and for the
past 27 years, along with his wife, Daphne,
had a group known as “Full Sail”. He was a
member of Mission Baptist Church in
Woodstock. He was active in community
service and was a member of the West Blocton
Elks Lodge. He was past board member of
Tri-County Youth Football and Bessemer
Academy School Board.
He is
survived by his wife, Daphne Brooks of
Woodstock; son, Donald Rance Brooks
(Brittany) of Atlanta; two daughters,
Valerie Charous (Jeff) of New Jersey, Ranae
Browning (William) of Trussville; brother,
Ronald Brooks of Guntersville; three
sisters, Geraldine Simpkins of Cullman,
Carolyn Deese of Anniston, Janice Hope of
Marietta, GA; three grandchildren, Kelsey
Browning, Audrey Charous and Jack Charous.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, Henderson
and Mable Brooks; brother, David Brooks and
sister, Cindy Brooks.
Pallbearers were Rance Brooks, William
Browning, Don Jackson, Larry Parsons, Ramey
Foster and Oscar Boles.

Constance A. Doss
Connie
Kornegay Doss, 64, formerly of Bibb County,
passed away on April 21, 2009 in Montgomery,
Alabama. Connie was raised in Brent, and was
a graduate of Bibb County High School and
Howard College School of Nursing. She is
survived by a son, Howard Cleveland IV
(Cindy) of Germantown, TN; a daughter, Amy
Shoaf (David) of Germantown, TN; four
grandchildren, Alex and Elizabeth Cleveland,
Clarkston and Hudson Shoaf; a sister, Nancy
Feltman (Don) of Woodstock, AL; a brother,
Arnell Smith (Joy) of Brent, AL; special
cousins, Janet Kornegay Watson and Mark
Kornegay of Montgomery, AL; her “special”
sister-friend, Eleita Kinard of Brent; and
Aunt Odie Ivy of Centreville.
She was
preceded in death by her mother, Christine
Smith; a sister, Patti Boles; a brother, Jim
Smith; and her grandparents, Welford and
Hardie Mae Kornegay.
A
memorial service will be held on Saturday,
May 2, at 11am at Four Points Baptist Church
in Centreville, AL. Anyone wishing to donate
in Connie’s name is asked to give to the
building fund at Four Points Baptist Church
or to the Gideons Bible fund.

Peggy
Langford Hopwood, 63, of Centreville, passed
away Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at DCH Regional
Medical Center. Funeral services were held
Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 3 p.m. at
Liberty Freewill Baptist Church with Rev.
Richard Bowers and Rev. Jackie Adcox
officiating. Burial was at Liberty Freewill
Cemetery, Rockco Funeral Home directing.
She is
survived by her son, Hoyt Lee Hopwood
(Brooke) of Birmingham; two grandchildren,
Jett and Jordan Hopwood; mother, Eskridge
Langford Foster of Lawley; two brothers,
Mickey Langford (Peggy) and Rondy Joe
Langford (Betty) all of Lawley.
Pallbearers were Steve Foster, Brad Foster,
John Peppers, Sammy Wallace, Butch Wallace
and Hartford Foster.

Mary
Pearl LaVigne, 87, of Marion, AL, passed
away on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at DCH in
Tuscaloosa. Funeral services were held
Monday, April 20, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Siloam
Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Schuyler
officiating. Burial followed at St.
Wilfred’s Cemetery, Kirk Funeral Homes
Marion Chapel directing.
Mrs.
LaVigne was born on September 9, 1921 in
Walker County to the late Claude and Meadie
Cunningham Sherer. She was a resident of
Southland Nursing Home in Marion, AL.
She is
survived by her daughters, Sherer B.
Averette (James) of Marion, and Joyce B.
Colburn of Gulf Port, MS; sons, Paul Hester
(Mary) of Alabaster, and Thomas W. Bolen,
Jr. (Mary) of Dallas, TX; one sister, Delora
Waddell of Eagle Rock, VA; six
grandchildren, Mrs. Becky Gordan (Adam),
Mrs. Annesia Miller (Jason), Mrs. Teresa
Pope (Thomas), Miss Cathy Averette, Mr.
Jonathan Averette (Charlie), and Mrs. JoAnn
Jackson (Jonathan); six great grandchildren,
Payton and Emma Pope, Tristan Miller, Justin
Thomas Miller, Katelyn Jackson and Leah
Gordan.
She was
preceded in death by her husband of 39
years, Fred Lynn LaVigne; two sisters,
Lillian Hill and Claudia Busby; and two
brothers, Howard and C. W. Sherer

Mitchell, 80, of Centreville, AL passed away
Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at his residence.
Funeral services were Friday, April 24, 2009
at 2 p.m. at Brent Baptist Church with Rev.

officiating. Burial followed in Pineland
Memorial Cemetery, Rockco Funeral Home
directing.
Mr.
Mitchell was a veteran of the United States
Air Force.
He is
survived by his wife, Sara J. Pennie
Mitchell of Centreville; two daughters,
Sheila Scott (Doug) of Brewton and Teressia
Freeman (Dennis) of Centreville; brother,
Odell Mitchell of Brent; sister, Ellen Smith
of Centreville; three grandchildren, Joseph
and Adam Freeman and Sara Scott.
He was
preceded in death by four sisters, Earl Dean
Freeman, Pauline Nichols, Idabelle Wallace,
Roger Dale Mitchell; two brothers, Onree and
Walter Mitchell.

Mary Ann
Roe, 88, of West Blocton, passed away
Saturday, April 18, 2009 at her residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 20,
2009 at 2 p.m. at West Blocton First Baptist
with Rev. Bob Praytor and Dr. Henry Cox
officiating. Burial followed at Schultz
Creek Cemetery, Rockco Funeral Home
directing.
Mary Ann
was born in Riverbend on January 30, 1921.
She lived all of her 88 years and 4 months
in Bibb County. She was a member of Schultz
Creek Baptist Church, Faith Baptist Church
and West Blocton First Baptist Church. She
filled many offices in each church and
worked as a leader in the WMU.
She is
survived by her daughters, Nita Owings
(Joe), Dianne Lippeatt (Billy); seven
grandchildren, Bryan Owings (Becky), Patrick
Owings (Christine), Valery Reach (Wayne),
Angela White (Brent), George Arnold
(Leslie), Sonya Wallace (Charles), Craig
Arnold; seven great grandchildren; and two
great-great grandchildren.
Her
special helpers were Louise Beasley, Lois
Kerr, Glenda Martin and members of Holistic
Hospice.
She was
preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and
Jessie Cox; brothers, R. C. Cox, George E.
Cox; sisters, Sybil Wallace, Dana Wallace;
son George Howard Arnold; and her husbands,
Howard Arnold and Howard Roe.
Pallbearers were Wayne Reach, Brent White,
Ben Owings, Patrick Owings, George Arnold,
Craig Arnold and Michael Nelson.
